The allure of investing in a carefully curated collection of works from active emerging artists lies in the diversified potential for outsized returns, diverging significantly from the 6-12% returns currently available via fractional investments in Picassos and other blue-chip artworks. Recent years have provided compelling examples of ultra contemporary artworks achieving remarkable returns. For instance, a painting by Avery Singer, Dancers Around An Effigy to Modernism, which sold for around $15,000 in 2013, sold for $3.1M in 2021. Similarly, Flora Yukhnovich's work, Tu Va me faire rougir, which initially sold for less than $40,000 in 2017, was acquired for $2.5M in 2022. The strong potential in Contemporary Artists Series 1 does not reside in the likelihood that all works included in the collection will achieve increases in value, or even maintain their values, but in the possibility that a subset of the works will achieve outsized returns. For example, just one work achieving a value of $750,000 in six years against a collection sale price of $140,000 today would generate a 32% annual return, even if nothing else in the collection were sold. The potential for a work of art purchased for $20,000 to climb to values of 50-300 times their purchase price within 6 to 8 years represents an investment opportunity that is unusual in other asset classes, albeit accompanied by commensurate risk. Inversion Art’s Approach to Early-Stage Art Investing Contemporary Artists Series 1 is further differentiated from other art investment opportunities due to Inversion Art’s unique approach based upon Silicon Valley investing best practices. Inspired by Y Combinator, the company takes an active role in supporting and accelerating the careers of the artists with whom it works, and in whom it invests, by providing capital, mentoring, logistical support, top-tier networking, and career advocacy (See: TechCrunch, ARTnews or BBC Radio). The artists selected for this auction have signed multi-year agreements to have Inversion Art provide 360-degree management of their studio affairs, including legal, financial, administrative and logistical services. Such services give these artists an edge and reduce the challenges of scaling an art practice that can lead to higher career failure rates. They keep artists freed up to pursue the sorts of ambitious projects that are the hallmark of highly successful careers, all while the company’s team leverages its network to drive new opportunities and amplify the artists’ careers. Artist Selection Methodology Inversion Art’s advisory team includes the curator for the Michael Ovitz Family Collection (Top 200 collector globally), the former Chairman of Global Fine Art for Sotheby’s (renowned as one of the top art advisors worldwide), as well as respected gallerists and other art market experts. Inversion Art co-founder Jonathan Neil has a PhD in Modern Art History from Columbia University, was the Founding Director of the Center for Business and Management of the Arts at Claremont Graduate University, writes regularly for the Brooklyn Rail, and was a contributing editor to Art Review magazine. Founder Joey Flores is an alumnus of Y Combinator, whose previous artist marketing company worked with 15,000 musical artists and 600 record labels prior to its acquisition in 2015. The company selects artists based on decades of combined and proven expertise, as well as data-driven signals correlated with high long-term art values. These include participation in top Masters of Fine Art programs, prestigious group shows, top residencies, and recipients of high-profile awards and major grants. In the company’s 2021 analysis of 1,000 artists who achieved similar signals over the past 15 years, one artist eventually achieved art values of $12 million, four achieved $3 million, and six achieved $1 million. At an average purchase price of $10,000, these represent 1,200x, 300x and 100x returns respectively. 10% of the artists analyzed achieved $100,000 or more, a 10x multiple against an average $10,000 starting value. These results, while outstanding, do not paint a complete picture, as they are limited to publicly available auction records. Most secondary sales for ultra contemporary art are likely to be private. On Due Diligence Inversion Art conducts a thorough due diligence process with every artist it accepts into its accelerator program. Artists provide a three-year summary of studio income, either in the form of tax returns, summary accounting statements from the artists' tax preparers, or equivalent bank record documentation. Additionally, every artist provides Inversion Art detailed information on their five most recent commercial sales, commissions, or licensing agreements over $5,000. The artists selected for inclusion in Contemporary Artists Series 1 averaged over $100,000 in studio revenue in 2022. On the Contemporary Artists Series 1 Artists The artists selected by Inversion Art for its own programs and Contemporary Artists Series 1 are highly acclaimed and have demonstrated many of the signals included in the market research. The artists in this collection include two PhDs in Art and Art History (including from Yale University), artists who have exhibited at MoMA PS1 and the Centre Pompidou, a 2022 Guggenheim Fellow, and an artist with works in the collection at the Whitney Museum. Furthermore, the artists have significant forward-looking opportunities. Imo Imeh is finalizing a series of six works which have been licensed to appear on six covers of the Journal of Biological Psychiatry out of Yale University. He is currently in talks to mount a significant exhibition of work with a notable Washington D.C. institution. A collector for Jennifer and Kevin McCoy is currently negotiating the donation of a high value single work to a major U.S. museum, which holds other of the artists' works and has already agreed to accept the work into its collection. Major new works by Maria Gaspar are on display at the Institute for Advanced Study at UC Santa Cruz, and selections from this exhibition, as well as new commissions, will go on view at The Gund Gallery in Ohio, at George Mason University in Virginia, and at the San Jose Museum of Art in California. The artist is currently in talks to mount a significant presentation at the Seattle Art Fair. The aShareX sale will be one of the first times that Gaspar's work is available for private collecting. Servane Mary shows with APALAZZOGALLERY in Brescia, Italy, where she has been the subject of solo and group exhibitions since 2017. The work in the aShareX sale is similar to the series Mary presented at the Palazzo Biandrà Mediolanum in Milan, Italy last year and which has been sold by APALAZZOGALLERY at prices equivalent to the painting’s high estimate in Contemporary Artists Series 1. Emerald Rose Whipple's work is currently featured at the House of Sound in New York City, a follow-up to her 2019 solo presentation with World of Macintosh. Last year, Whipple was the subject of a solo show at Gallery Nathalie Karg in New York City, and at Anne Claire Simon Gallery in Paris, France in 2021. Her work is widely collected in both the U.S. and Europe. Wilfred Ukpong recently opened a solo presentation at Autograph, London, a major art center dedicated to artists using photography and film in the service of social justice. A print of the work in the aShareX sale is featured in the Autograph exhibition; another print of the same work is held in the collection of the Fitchburg Art Museum in Massachusetts. Ukpong was shortlisted for the inaugural Saltzman Prize for Emerging International Photographers. Ukpong’s works have been exhibited at FotoFest, Houston; Institut Français du Nigeria Abuja; MARKK Museum, Hamburg; the Royal Society of Arts, London; and the Welt Museum, Vienna. On the Low and High Estimates, and Industry Standard Discounts The aggregate retail price of the works included in Contemporary Collection I is $158,000, with considerable information below about similar works sold from each artist. The low estimate is set at $120,000, which is 24% below the retail price and presents an opportunity to invest in a curated collection of high-potential artists for well below what it would cost to purchase the same collection of works directly from each studio. It is noteworthy that most unknown collectors would receive, at most, a 5-10% discount against the retail price of a work, and would likely not be permitted to purchase signature works (those of most important size, provenance, etc.). Notable collectors or collectors purchasing more than one work might receive a 10-15% discount. Institutions such as museums or foundations might receive up to a 20% discount. This collection includes signature works, historically unavailable to most collectors and fractional investors. The 24% discount accounted for in the low estimate has been negotiated with the artists in exchange for a 10% royalty on any future profits of the collection should the profits exceed $60,000, providing for a lower entry opportunity to invest in the artists while aligning the interests of all parties to contribute to the collection’s value growth through ongoing marketing and further exhibition opportunities. Inversion Art and the artists are committed to continued promotion of the works in the collection and will seek high value exhibiting opportunities for the works to increase their associated provenance and values. Several of the works in this collection have already been exhibited in outstanding institutions across the U.S. and Europe. Pricing Support Most private art transactions are confidential by agreement and, as such, complete disclosure of exact historical prices is not possible. However, as much transparency as is possible into each artist’s historical sales is provided below while honoring the confidentiality of past collectors. Imo Nse Imeh Parliament 2, 2022 | 96 x 96 in. | Retail Price: $34,000 Imo Imeh is known for his large-scale works on unstretched canvas, which can be up to 96 x 96 in., including Parliament 2. The following sales are all for similarly sized works: 2024: Commission of Frederick Douglass for Mechanic’s Hall: Commission price exceeds $34,000 by more than 15% 2023: Commission for the cover of the Journal of Biological Psychiatry (Yale): Licensing rights-only purchased for within 15% of $34,000 (no title transfer) 2020: Benediction acquired by the Petrucci Family Foundation Collection of African American Art (institutional discount applied): within 18% of $34,000 (4 years ago) Kevin & Jenn McCoy YellowBlack Geometry, 2023 | 36.5 x 30 in. | Retail Price: $11,000 PinkGray Geometry, 2023 | 50 x 35.25 in. | Retail Price: $13,000 GrayWhite Geometry, 2023 | 50 x 35.25 in. | Retail Price: $12,000 Jennifer and Kevin McCoy have a highly diverse practice that includes generative digital works, including the first NFT ever created (Quantum), mixed-media works, such as Horror Chase (in dialog to be accepted into a prestigious museum), and their most recent series of generative works painted physically by a custom-built plotter. The three physical works included in Contemporary Artists Series 1 are from the most recent plotter series. Because the McCoys’ works are so distinct from one another, there is only one comparable sale of a similar work from the most recent series. However, the McCoys have a proven record of six- and seven-figure sales, including: Quantum, 2014 (the first NFT): Sold at Sotheby’s in 2021 for $1,472,000 Quantum Leap, NFT, Artnet auction, $100,000 Quantum Leap, NFT, Philips auction, $160,000 2023: Geometry 23-06a; Plotter-executed acrylic on paper: Sold for $11,000 (work from the same series as the three works in Contemporary Artists Series 1) Additionally, in 2023 they sold numerous editions of their Land Sea and Sky NFT series for $10,000 each. Servane Mary Untitled (Oxidation), 2023 | 76 x 104in. | Retail Price: $22,000 When assessing the values of Servane Mary’s works, size plays a significant role in pricing. The Untitled work in Contemporary Artists Series 1 is 76 x 104 in., making it significantly larger than other works recently sold, but smaller than a 2021 work which sold for $55,000. 2021: $55,000 for 192 x 192 in. work 2022: $18,000 for 48 x 48 in. work 2023: $12,500 for 76 x 50 in. work Emerald Rose Whipple Light on the Water, Surfer's Cove 2, 2021 | 30 x 40in. | Retail Price: $22,000 Comparable historical sales: 2020: $40,000 for 48 x 60 in. work 2020: $20,000 for 36 x 48 in. work 2021: $24,000 for 30 x 40 in. work 2021: $24,000 for 30 x 40 in. work Maria Gaspar Cloud Out (Suspend), 2023 | 41 x 75in. | Retail Price: $16,000 Maria Gaspar is one of the most celebrated artists included in the collection (See: New York Times | ARTFORUM | New York Times). Over the past three years, she has won a Guggenheim Fellowship, the US Artist Fellowship, the LatinX Artist Fellowship and the Frieze Impact Prize. Maria does not make her work widely available for private collecting. It is historically financed by institutional honorariums ranging in value from $10,000 to $15,000, which generally only covers the cost of production. This collection represents one of the first opportunities for private collecting of Gaspar’s work. Wilfred Ukpong BC1-ND-FC: Are my Dreams Too Bold for the Carbon Skin I Bear #1, 2017 | 59 x 59in. | Retail Price: $28,000 Comparable historical sales: 2022: Edition 1 of Blazing Century Print sold for $30,000 2021: Edition 1 of Blazing Century Print sold for $25,000 2021: Edition 1 of 2 Blazing Century Prints sold $20,000 to a U.S.-based museum Legal For a full overview of the aShareX offering, including potential risks, please review the Offering Circular here.
